Buinsk is a district centre in the southwest of Tatarstan, on the Karla River, a modest stream in the farmland west of the Volga. From above it appears as a compact town of fairly regular streets laid out beside the river, with the land around it divided into the large, open fields typical of the Volga uplands.
Like many Russian provincial towns, Buinsk combines an older pattern of streets and private houses with later apartment blocks, public buildings and industrial areas at the edges. On a map these show up as changes in scale: small plots near the centre, larger footprints farther out, and straight roads leaving town toward neighbouring villages.
The town received urban status in the late eighteenth century and has long served as a market centre for the surrounding agricultural district.
