Bujumbura sits at the northeastern corner of Lake Tanganyika, one of the deepest and oldest lakes in the world. The city spreads across a flat strip of land between the water and a steep escarpment to the east, so the map shows a wide, level urban area pressed against a long shoreline with hills rising sharply behind it.
Until 2019 it was Burundi's capital, and it remains the country's largest city and economic centre. The central district follows a planned layout with wide avenues, while neighbourhoods spread outward along the lake and up the lower slopes. Small rivers such as the Ntahangwa descend from the hills and cut across the city toward the lake.
