Buldāna is the headquarters of Buldhana district in Maharashtra, set on a plateau in the Ajanta hill range at the western edge of Vidarbha. Its elevation gives it a milder climate than the plains around it. On the map, streets spread over uneven ground and the edges of town break into farmland and wooded slopes.
The town is modest in size, with a centre of government offices, markets and older lanes, and newer housing on its fringes. The wider district is known for Lonar Lake, a crater formed by a meteorite impact, which lies some distance to the southeast rather than in the town itself.
