Burla lies in the Sambalpur district of western Odisha, close to the Mahanadi River and a short distance from Hirakud Dam, one of the longest earthen dams in the world. The town grew largely around the dam project and later around its institutions, including Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology, Sambalpur University and a major medical college and hospital.
From above, Burla has a planned, spacious character in many areas. Campus grounds occupy large blocks with internal roads, open fields and residential quarters. The town is linked by road to Sambalpur, and the Hirakud reservoir and its canals shape the landscape to the north and west. The Mahanadi runs nearby, with farmland on the surrounding plain.
