Cadereyta Jiménez lies in Nuevo León, east of the Monterrey metropolitan area, on the highway toward the Gulf coast and the Tamaulipas border. From above the historic centre is a regular colonial grid around a main square. Newer neighbourhoods spread out from it, and large industrial areas lie on the edges.
The town is one of the older settlements in Nuevo León, founded during the Spanish colonial period. Today it is best known as the site of a major PEMEX oil refinery, which appears on a map as a large, geometric complex of tanks and processing units. Its footprint is comparable to that of the town itself.
