Caldwell is a city in western Idaho, in the Treasure Valley about thirty miles west of Boise. It grew up along the railroad in the late nineteenth century, and its older centre still shows the straight streets and rectangular blocks typical of a railroad town, set at an angle to the section-line roads of the surrounding farmland.
The Boise River passes along the north side of the city, and Interstate 84 cuts through on its way between Boise and Oregon. Around the edges, residential growth meets irrigated fields, canals and orchards, and the Snake River wine region lies to the south and west.
A Caldwell map poster shows this layered geometry: the tilted downtown grid, the long diagonal of the interstate, the river's winding line and the square pattern of farm roads beyond. The city is also home to the College of Idaho, whose campus sits close to the centre.
