The historic centre of Campeche is a near-perfect grid of straight streets, originally enclosed by a hexagonal wall with bastions at its corners. Much of the wall was removed over time, but its outline still reads on the map as a ring road around the old town. Beyond it, newer districts extend along the coast and up into the low hills behind the city.
The walls were built in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries to protect the port from pirate attacks, which had repeatedly struck the city. Several bastions and two main gates survive, along with hilltop forts on either side of town. The historic fortified town of Campeche is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognised as an example of Spanish colonial military planning.
Along the waterfront, the malecón runs for several kilometres beside the Gulf, a long, straight line that forms the western edge of the city. Surviving bastions punctuate the ring around the centre, while forts on hills at either end of the city overlook the bay and the streets below.

The seafront promenade runs along the Gulf of Mexico in a long, clean line, separating the city from the shallow water and giving the map its western edge.
