Caohe is the seat of Qichun County in eastern Hubei, on the north side of the Yangtze River. The town sits where low hills meet the river plain, so its streets bend with the terrain on one side and spread more regularly toward flatter land on the other. Ponds, lakes and small waterways are scattered across the surrounding countryside.
Qichun is known in China as the home of Li Shizhen, the Ming dynasty physician and naturalist who wrote the Compendium of Materia Medica. His memory is an important part of local identity, and the area is associated with traditional medicinal plants.
