Capela is a municipality in the state of Alagoas, in northeastern Brazil, set inland from the Atlantic coast and the state capital, Maceió. The surrounding country is agricultural, dominated for generations by sugarcane, and the landscape rolls in low hills and shallow valleys.
From above, the town is a small, dense core of streets that spread in the directions the terrain allows. Some blocks line up neatly, others bend with slopes and watercourses, and the main roads run out of town across open countryside. The pattern is informal and easy to follow.
