Carnaíba is in the Pajeú region of Pernambuco's sertão, the semi-arid interior of northeastern Brazil. From above, the town is a compact cluster of streets around a central square and church, with a regular grid that ends quickly. Beyond it, the dry caatinga scrubland takes over.
In this landscape, water shapes the map even when it is absent. Seasonal streams and dry riverbeds wind across the countryside, and small reservoirs and weirs appear as isolated shapes of water. Roads run straight out to nearby towns in the valley, and rural tracks spread in long, thin lines to farms and communities.
