Cartagena is a coastal town in the Valparaíso Region of Chile, just north of the port of San Antonio. From above it is defined by the Pacific. The town wraps around a bay, with a larger beach and a smaller, sheltered one, and its streets climb the hillsides behind in winding, stepped patterns.
For much of the twentieth century Cartagena was a popular seaside resort for families from Santiago, and the dense grid near the shore reflects that period. The poet Vicente Huidobro lived and is buried here. Higher up, the street pattern loosens as the terrain rises, so the map shows clearly how the town is built into its slopes.
