Castel Volturno stretches along the coast of Campania, north of Naples, for a long run of sandy shore. The town takes its name from the Volturno, one of southern Italy's major rivers, which reaches the Tyrrhenian Sea here. From above, the old centre sits by the river, and a thin band of settlement extends along the beach.
The Via Domiziana runs parallel to the coast and forms the main spine. Planned holiday districts, pine forests, wetlands and coastal lakes fill the land between road and sea. The Volturno mouth is a protected wetland known for birdlife, and it gives the map a strong curve where the river meets the shore.
