Changleng lies on flat ground northwest of Nanchang in Jiangxi province, in a lowland region crossed by rivers and irrigation channels. From above, the settlement reads as a set of built-up blocks surrounded by a patchwork of fields, ponds and drainage lines. The land barely rises, so roads can run long distances without bending.
Much of the street pattern is recent. Wide, straight roads mark out large rectangular plots, and older lanes and village clusters sit between them at a smaller scale. Water is always close. Channels and small reservoirs cut through the farmland in thin lines and irregular shapes that break up the geometry of the new roads.
