Chatra is the headquarters of Chatra district in northern Jharkhand, close to the border with Bihar. It sits on the edge of the Chota Nagpur plateau, and the map shows a compact town centre with roads radiating out across rolling, partly forested country and small agricultural villages.
The district has long been called a gateway to Jharkhand from the north, and the town's roads reflect that role: several routes converge here before heading on into the plateau. Around the centre, the street network is tight and irregular, typical of an older market town, and it loosens quickly into lanes and fields.
