Chavuma lies in Zambia's North-Western Province, close to the Angolan border. The Zambezi rises in Zambia, flows briefly through Angola, then turns back into Zambia near Chavuma. On a map the river is the defining line, broad and winding, with its bends passing close to the town.
Just north of the town are the Chavuma Falls, a stretch of rapids where the Zambezi narrows over rock before it continues south across the plains. The settlement itself is modest, with a few roads, scattered buildings and paths leading to villages and fields along the river.
A Chavuma map poster is about the river first. The Zambezi's channel, bends and floodplain take up much of the frame, and the town's roads and tracks form a lighter pattern around it.
