Chiengi stands at the northern end of Zambia's Luapula Province, on the shore of Lake Mweru. The lake is shared with the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and the border runs through the water. The shoreline is the defining line of the map, a long arc of coast with the town set just back from the beach.
The street network is modest and open. A few main roads meet near the centre, with smaller tracks leading down to landing places on the water and back into the bush. Fishing is central to life along this shore, and the settlement pattern keeps turning toward the lake.
A Chiengi map poster is mostly about that relationship between land and water. A large, calm expanse of lake fills one side of the frame, and a light scatter of streets fills the other. It is a spacious composition that feels very different from a dense city map.
