Chișinău spreads across gentle hills on both sides of the Bîc River, a small tributary of the Dniester. The older town grew near the river, while the nineteenth-century Russian administration laid out a regular grid of straight streets on the higher ground to the west, which still forms the city centre today.
The main axis is Ștefan cel Mare Boulevard, running through the centre past the Cathedral Park and the Triumphal Arch. Beyond the grid, large Soviet-era residential districts with long blocks fill the outer hills, and the map is punctuated by green spaces and lakes, including Valea Morilor and Valea Trandafirilor.
