Chumukedima lies in Nagaland, just east of Dimapur, at the point where the flat plain begins to rise into the Naga Hills. The map records that change clearly. On the plain, streets and settlements spread across relatively level ground. To the east, the terrain rises into forested ridges, and the roads switch to winding curves that follow the contours.
The main highway toward Kohima runs through the town and begins its climb into the hills nearby, forming the strongest line on the map. Around it, neighbourhoods have grown quickly, with a mix of planned and informal streets. Streams descend from the hills across the plain, and patches of forest and farmland fill the gaps between built areas.
Chumukedima became the headquarters of a new district in 2021, and the town has continued to expand alongside neighbouring Dimapur, the state's main commercial hub.
