Clovis Map Poster & Print
Clovis lies on the High Plains of eastern New Mexico, close to the Texas line, on land that is almost perfectly flat. It was founded in the early twentieth century as a railroad town, and on the map the railway still cuts diagonally through a strict grid of numbered and named streets, with rail yards stretching alongside.
The name travels far through archaeology. Distinctive stone spear points found at Blackwater Draw near Clovis gave the name to the Clovis culture, among the best-known early peoples of North America. The town also has a place in music history, as Buddy Holly recorded several early hits at Norman Petty's studio here.
A Clovis map poster reads as clean plains geometry. The grid stretches evenly in every direction, broken only by the railway and a few highways, and there are no rivers or hills to disturb it. West of town lies Cannon Air Force Base, whose runways add long straight strokes to the wider map.

Plains grid
The streets form an even, unbroken grid across level ground, giving the map a steady rhythm that looks especially crisp in black and white.
Highways to the horizon
Straight highways leave town toward Texas and the rest of New Mexico, running across open country in long lines typical of the High Plains.
