Collo lies on the Mediterranean coast of northeastern Algeria, in the province of Skikda. The town sits at the back of a sheltered bay, protected by a rocky headland, with forested hills behind. On a map, the curve of the shoreline sets the entire composition, with the town's streets packed between the water and the slopes.
The site has been inhabited since antiquity, when it was known as Chullu, a port of the Phoenician and later Roman world. Today it is a fishing and holiday town, with a small harbour and beaches along the bay. The coast to the north rises into a rugged cape country that stretches toward some of the northernmost points of Algeria.
