Colomoncagua is a municipality in the Intibucá department of Honduras, close to the border with El Salvador. The terrain is mountainous, and the town sits among hills and ravines. On a map, the small centre has a few blocks laid out around a square, while roads leaving it wind along slopes and ridges instead of running straight.
The name is known beyond Honduras because of the refugee camp that stood near here in the 1980s, when thousands of Salvadorans fled the civil war across the border. Many later returned home and founded new communities in El Salvador. Today the municipality is mostly rural, with scattered villages and farmland in the hills.
