Conversano sits on a low hill in the countryside south-east of Bari, in Apulia. From above, the old town is a tight oval of narrow streets at the highest point, with the castle and cathedral at its centre. Newer neighbourhoods spread out around it in a more regular pattern, and roads leave in all directions across the countryside.
The town is known for its Norman castle, its Romanesque cathedral and the Benedictine monastery of San Benedetto. The surrounding area is famous for cherries, and the land is dotted with small natural lakes and ponds formed in the karst limestone, an unusual feature in this dry part of southern Italy.
