Corabia sits on the north bank of the Danube in Olt County, in southern Romania, facing Bulgaria across the river. The town was laid out in the late nineteenth century as a river port, and from above its planning is obvious. Long straight streets spread out on a regular pattern across the flat Danube plain.
The river forms the southern edge of the map as a broad, calm band, with wetlands and islands in the channel. The town's streets reach towards the port area, and on the landward side the grid gives way to farmland crossed by straight field roads.
On the edge of the town are the remains of Sucidava, a Roman and early Byzantine fortress with traces of an old bridge across the Danube. A Corabia map poster shows a planned town on the lower Danube with its riverfront and ancient site together in one frame.
