Coswig lies in the Elbe valley in Saxony, roughly between Dresden and Meissen. The town spreads across the flat valley floor, and the land to the north rises into the slopes that border the river corridor. On a map, residential streets, a railway line and main roads all run roughly parallel to the Elbe.
The terraced slopes along this part of the valley belong to the Saxon wine region, one of the northernmost in Europe. A Coswig map poster shows the transition from an ordered pattern of streets and houses to the steeper ground where vineyards and woodland take over.
