Cottage Grove lies in Washington County, south-east of Saint Paul, along the Mississippi River. The western edge of the city follows the river, with bluffs, wetlands and islands along the bank. Inland, the map shows the typical pattern of a growing Twin Cities suburb: winding residential streets, ponds, parks and a few main highways crossing through.
The area was settled in the mid-nineteenth century as a farming community, and some of that agricultural landscape still shows at the city's eastern and southern edges. Much of the modern city took shape in the second half of the twentieth century, as the metro area expanded south-east along the river.
