Covina lies in the eastern San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles County. On a map, it is almost entirely flat and orthogonal, with long avenues running north–south and east–west in a steady rhythm. Interstate 10 runs across the southern part of the city, and the Metrolink rail line passes close to the historic centre.
The city was founded in the late nineteenth century, and for decades it was surrounded by citrus groves. Its downtown along Citrus Avenue keeps the smaller blocks and older storefronts of that period. Postwar tracts of houses fill most of the surrounding grid, filling in land that was once orchards.
