From above, the town is a compact grid of streets surrounded on all sides by fields that stretch to the horizon. Irrigation canals and farm roads cut across the land in long straight lines.
Agriculture shapes the town's economy, and sugar beet processing has long been part of local industry. The surrounding plain is carefully divided into rectangular plots, and on a map that division creates a strong geometric pattern around the looser weave of the town centre.
