Da’an lies in the western part of Chongqing municipality, in the hilly country of the Sichuan Basin. The ground here is rarely flat. Low, rounded hills follow one another, and the land between them has been shaped over generations into terraced fields and small ponds. On a map, this creates a dense, detailed pattern.
