Darāw lies in Aswan Governorate in Upper Egypt, on the east side of the Nile north of Aswan. From above, the landscape is made of clear bands: the river, a strip of irrigated fields, the town, and then the edge of the desert. The built-up area stretches along the road and railway that follow the valley.
The town is best known for its camel market, one of the largest in Egypt, where animals brought north from Sudan are traded. On the map, the streets form a close, irregular pattern typical of Upper Egyptian towns, with wider roads marking the main routes through it.
