Dashtobod is in Jizzakh Region in eastern Uzbekistan, on flat land close to the border with Tajikistan. From above, the defining features are the irrigation canals. They cut across the fields in straight lines, and the town's streets form a loose grid between them.
This area was largely turned into farmland during the twentieth century, when canals brought water to the dry steppe. The pattern of that work is still clear on the map: straight ditches, rectangular fields and roads that follow the same directions. The town serves as a local centre for the surrounding agricultural communities.
