Datong is a district of Huainan in northern Anhui Province, on the broad plain of the Huai River. From above, it shows the pattern of a Chinese industrial city: blocks of housing and works laid out along main roads, railway lines crossing the flat land, and lakes and ponds scattered between the settled areas.
Huainan grew as a coal-mining city, and Datong's development is tied closely to that industry. Mining has left its marks on the landscape of the wider area, including water-filled subsidence zones that appear on maps as irregular lakes and wetlands among the fields.
