Dawan lies in Chongqing Municipality, in the hilly country of the Sichuan Basin. On a map it is compact and shaped by the terrain. The streets follow the valley floor and the lower slopes, while the ridges around it remain largely unbuilt. Roads leave the town by winding along the lines of the landscape rather than cutting straight across it.
The countryside around Chongqing is known for its closely packed hills, and farmers have terraced many slopes over generations. From above this creates a fine, layered texture that contrasts with the denser streets of the town. Small reservoirs and streams fill the lowest ground.
