Dehlorān lies in the south-west of Ilam Province. The last folds of the Zagros meet a wide, dry plain here, close to the border with Iraq. On a map the town is a compact block of streets. Around it the land is bare, crossed by seasonal watercourses and roads that run long distances between settlements.
The Deh Luran plain is well known to archaeologists. Excavations at sites such as Ali Kosh have made it one of the key areas for studying early farming in western Iran. Today the district is also linked to oil and gas activity, and the town serves a wide rural area.
