Dendermonde lies in East Flanders, where the Dender flows into the Scheldt. The confluence is the defining feature of the map: two rivers meeting at the edge of the old town, with the broad, winding Scheldt curving past to the north.
For centuries Dendermonde was a fortified town, and the outline of its former defences can still be traced in the shape of the centre. Inside, streets lead to the Grote Markt, with its town hall and belfry, which is part of the UNESCO-listed group of Belgian and French belfries.
The town is famous for the Ros Beiaard procession, in which a huge wooden horse carrying four brothers is paraded through the streets, a tradition held only once every ten years.
