Devgarh lies in the Aravalli hills of central Rajasthan, in the historic region of Mewar. The town grew as the seat of a local thakur family, and their palace still stands on raised ground above the houses. From above, the settlement looks compact and irregular. Narrow lanes bend around older plots, not along a planned grid, and the whole town draws inward toward its elevated centre.
The town is also known in art history. A distinct school of miniature painting developed at the Devgarh court in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, related to but separate from the main Mewar style. Works from that tradition now hang in museum collections. The palace itself has since become a heritage hotel, which brings visitors to a town that otherwise sees little tourist traffic.

The old quarter has no regular blocks. Its narrow streets fork, curve and dead-end in the way of long-settled Rajasthani towns, making a fine-grained, irregular texture.
