Dibba Al-Hisn lies on the east coast of the United Arab Emirates, on a wide bay of the Gulf of Oman near the northern end of the coast. The town is part of the larger Dibba area, which is divided between Oman, Sharjah and Fujairah. From above, the built-up area runs as a narrow strip between the sea and the steep, bare Hajar mountains.
The word hisn means fort, which points to the town's past as a fortified coastal settlement. Dibba itself is an old name in the region's history. It is associated with a battle fought here in the early Islamic period, and the area has been inhabited and traded from for a very long time.
