Dickinson is the main town of southwestern North Dakota, set on rolling grassland where the plains begin to break toward the badlands. Its streets follow a straightforward grid laid out beside the railroad. Interstate 94 runs along the town's edge, linking it east to Bismarck and west toward Montana.
The Heart River winds through the town in loose, meandering bends, the one curved line in an otherwise rectilinear plan. Dickinson State University occupies a campus near the centre. The town works as a gateway to Theodore Roosevelt National Park, whose badlands begin a short drive west near Medora.
