Dikwa lies in Borno State, in northeastern Nigeria, on the wide plain that drains toward Lake Chad. It holds a notable place in regional history. At the end of the nineteenth century Rabih az-Zubayr made it his capital, and afterward it served for a time as the seat of the Shehu of Borno.
On a map Dikwa is a dense, compact settlement set in a very open landscape. The town has a tight core of irregular lanes and compounds, a few roads leading out toward neighbouring towns, and then flat land in every direction. Seasonal watercourses and farmland mark the plain.

Roads across the plain
A few long roads leave Dikwa toward the surrounding towns of Borno. They are the only strong lines crossing the flat country around it.
