Doda is the headquarters of Doda district, in the Chenab valley of Jammu and Kashmir. The town sits on a hillside at over a thousand metres, with mountains rising steeply around it. On a map, the streets climb and switch back rather than forming any kind of grid, following the few flatter shelves of land available.
The Chenab river runs through deep valleys nearby, and the roads that link Doda with the rest of the region follow the contours of these valleys, winding for long distances between settlements. Terraced fields and scattered hamlets cling to the slopes, and forests cover the higher ground.
