Eastwood sits on high ground on the western edge of Nottinghamshire. The Erewash valley below it marks the border with Derbyshire. The map shows a main road running along the ridge, with terraced streets off both sides and later housing estates beyond them. To the west, the valley floor, with its river and the line of a canal, forms a clear boundary.
Eastwood is the birthplace of D. H. Lawrence. His house on Victoria Street is now a museum, and the town and nearby collieries appear, lightly disguised, in his novels. The pits have closed, but the tight rows of miners' terraces still show on the map as short parallel streets packed close together.
