Elazığ lies in eastern Anatolia on a broad upland plain, and its map is more regular than that of many Turkish cities. The modern town was developed in the nineteenth century below the older settlement of Harput, and it spreads out in a fairly orderly network of avenues and blocks, with newer districts extending across the flat ground in several directions.
Harput itself still stands on a hill just to the north, with its castle, old mosques and views across the plain. Water shapes the wider region: the reservoir of the Keban Dam on the Euphrates lies to the north and west, and Lake Hazar, the source of the Tigris, lies in the mountains to the southeast.
