Elektrostal’ lies about fifty kilometres east of Moscow, in a landscape of flat forest and small rivers. The town grew in the twentieth century around a metallurgical plant that produced high-quality electric steel, and the name refers directly to that. Heavy engineering and nuclear fuel production are still part of the local economy. It received town status in 1938 and has kept the organised structure of a Soviet industrial town ever since.
