Encruzilhada is a municipality in the southwest of the state of Bahia, in Brazil's interior uplands. The town's name translates as crossroads, and from above the idea is easy to see: rural roads converge on a compact urban area whose streets form a simple network around its centre. Open farmland and pasture extend on all sides.
The town centre gathers around a main square and church, a pattern common to many towns in the Brazilian interior. From there, streets extend outward, becoming more spaced as they reach the edges of the settlement. The municipality itself is large and mostly rural, with the town occupying only a small part of it.
