Eppelborn is a municipality in the Neunkirchen district of Saarland, in southwestern Germany. It is made up of several villages rather than one single town. From above, each settlement has its own cluster of streets, linked by country roads that wind through a landscape of low hills, woodland and meadows.
The main village of Eppelborn sits in a valley that also carries the local rail line. Newer residential streets climb the surrounding slopes. As in much of Saarland, the pattern looks like a network of villages that gradually grew toward each other, with forest and fields still filling the gaps between them.
An Eppelborn map poster shows that polycentric structure clearly. Several small cores are spread across the sheet, connected by thin curving roads and separated by open green ground. The result is a balanced, relaxed composition, quite different from a single dense city.
