Erannoli lies in Kannur district in northern Kerala, a short distance inland from the coastal town of Thalassery. Like much of the Malabar region, it does not have a single compact centre. Houses are spread out along a network of roads and lanes, set among trees, gardens and fields, so the town merges gradually into the surrounding villages.
On a map this settlement pattern makes a fine, branching mesh. Main roads link Erannoli with Thalassery and the rest of the district, and smaller lanes loop off them to reach individual homesteads. Streams and low-lying fields interrupt the network here and there.
