Errenteria lies in Gipuzkoa, just east of San Sebastián, where the Oiartzun river flows toward the narrow inlet of Pasaia harbour. On the map, the town fills a valley floor between steep, green hills. A compact historic centre sits near the river, and denser modern blocks spread up the slopes. Roads and railway lines follow the valley toward the coast.
The town was granted its charter in the fourteenth century and has a small medieval core. In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries it became one of the industrial towns of the Basque Country, with factories along the river. Today it is closely connected to the San Sebastián metropolitan area.
