Erwitte lies in the district of Soest in North Rhine-Westphalia, on the Hellweg, the historic east-west route along the edge of the Westphalian lowlands. The town has long been associated with limestone quarrying and cement production, and the quarries and works on its outskirts appear as large, sharply outlined areas on a map.
The historic centre is compact, with streets gathering around the church and the Renaissance moated castle, Schloss Erwitte. To the northwest lies Bad Westernkotten, a district of Erwitte known as a spa, where long wooden graduation towers filter salt brine. Those towers show on the map as long, narrow shapes among the parkland.
