Eslāmābād-e Gharb lies in Kermanshah Province in western Iran, on a broad agricultural plain enclosed by the ridges of the Zagros Mountains. The town stands on the main road running west from Kermanshah toward the Iraqi border, a route that has carried travellers and trade for centuries.
The level ground has allowed a fairly regular plan. From above, the town reads as a set of straight streets and rectangular blocks around a central area, with the main road crossing it and farmland stretching out on all sides toward the mountains.
The town was previously known as Shahabad and was renamed after 1979. Its population is largely Kurdish, and the surrounding plain is an important farming area. An Eslāmābād-e Gharb map poster shows a compact, orderly town set in open country, framed by the long mountain ranges of the Zagros.
