Extremoz sits just north of Natal in Rio Grande do Norte. It is part of the city's metropolitan area but keeps its own separate shape. On a map the municipality runs from inland farmland out to the Atlantic coast. The ocean edge is long and gently curved, while the town centre lies back from the sea on higher ground.
The biggest feature inland is the Lagoa de Extremoz, a wide freshwater lagoon that supplies part of Natal's water. It shows up on the map as a large, irregular open space ringed by roads and scattered settlement. Toward the coast the street pattern thins out, and sand and dune areas take the place of blocks.
