Fanlou lies in the northwest of Jiangsu, in the lowland country around Xuzhou where the provinces of eastern China meet. The land is flat and intensively farmed. On the map the town appears as a small, well-defined cluster of streets, with the pattern of fields and waterways taking over immediately beyond its edge.
Water is part of the structure here. Canals and drainage channels run through the farmland in straight or gently curving lines, and roads often follow them. Villages sit at regular intervals, their lanes forming small, tight shapes linked to the town by the main routes.
